It is not only actors and musicians who get to attend awards ceremonies. Fair enough, they get to attend the year's most talked about events in the entertainment industry, but there are plenty more ceremonies attended by the likes of you, me and other non-celebrities.
Whether it is a ceremony to award your company's employees of the year, or an industry awards ceremony in which your business is up for a prize, most of us will attend at least one rewards night in our lives.
Although not quite as glamorous as the Oscars, the larger part of awards ceremonies are flashy occasions, to which people are expected to arrive in formal dress. They are often held in conference rooms, historical venues or restaurants. This means they are never cheap to attend.
Included in the price of a ticket at most ceremonies you will get a meal, a set amount of drinks, and entertainment such as live music and a late night disco.
So what does one wear to such a special occasion?
Women's Formal Dress Ideas
Women should seek inspiration from what has been spotted on the red carpet, but by all means should not feel obligated to follow suit. Celebrities get designer outfits thrown at them for free because there is no better publicity than a star papped in your gown at one of the year's biggest events. But for those of us with lower imports, designer outfits are often out of reach.
Mid-end designer clothing can be bought at discount retailers both on the high street and online but they can not be depended on to have the right sizes. Your best bet is to traipse around the shops for a few days.
Some of the most noticeable award ceremony outfits over the years have featured quirky design elements like feathers and semi-precious jewels. Look for sleeveless dresses with an embellished corset to imitate the look. Alternately, the skirt of the dress could have been adorned with accessories.
Favorite colors are reds, blues and the classic black. White is also quite big but is not the most practical choice if the event involves food and drinks.
If you choose a dress with a lot of bling, team it with simple shoes. Patent leather boots are a popular choice. Alternately, if you have opted for a simple dress, jazz it up with sparkly or embellished shoes.
Men's Formal Dress Ideas
Most women love a man in a suit, and dinner suits a la James Bond are often the preferred style. Awards ceremonies are a great reason to invest in a timeless classic. Tuxedos and smoking jackets are also favorites.
Celebrities tend to experiment with trouser and jacket shapes and fabrics. A trendy, contemporary style is the drop crotch formal trouser that is young and cool.
Modern mens blazers come in a range of fabrics. Look out for ones with a bit of shine, or contrasting lapels for an easy way to update a classic look.
If you are adventurous, choose trousers and a jacket in different colors like black and dark red.
Go all out by choosing a jacket with a front chest pocket that you can adorn with a folded handkerchief in a vibrant tone to brighten up your dark attire.
Substitute your tie for a bow tie that will look very impressive in most formal settings.
Shoes should always be leather. Patent is a great formal look.
