Perhaps it’s because leather jackets last so long that they keep making comeback after comeback, year in and year out. This doesn’t mean that it’s the same style of jacket that keeps showing up; in fact the styles are incredibly varied. But you can be sure that every season will introduce at least a handful of new designs.
Leather is a material that has been used for so long it is impossible to imagine when it wasn’t popular. And since superstars and celebrities continuously wear leather jackets, leather shoes and often also leather pants and jumpsuits, it is not surprising that this material has continued to be a popular one.
One of the great factors of leather jackets is that they come in an incredible array of shapes and sizes. These range from the short waist-length bomber jacket to long, retro styles that are more in keeping with the original bomber style from the First World War. Then there are motorcycle jackets, including the Harley Davidson jacket that is so popular amongst those who are obsessed with motor bikes.
One of the things that certainly keeps the flight jacket and motorcycle jacket in fashion is that they have become linked to legends. For instance teenage icon James Dean, although long gone, is still featured in books and on posters wearing his impressionable leather gear. Others legends who have also ensured that leather jackets will always make a comeback include actor Marlon Brando – another Harley Davidson fan, the king of rock, Elvis Presley, stuntman Evel Knievel, and the rough-cut advertising campaign-man the Marboro Man. A more recent design sported by Tom Cruise in the 1986 movie, Top Gun jacket is still a fashion item, clearly thanks to the original dishy wearer.
